What is emergency dentistry?

Emergency dentistry provides immediate treatment for potentially serious oral health problems. If you fall and chip a tooth or develop a toothache that doesn’t improve with at-home treatment, contact Dr. Park immediately. The sooner she can identify the underlying cause, the sooner she can make recommendations to help you feel better.

What types of problems does emergency dentistry treat?

At Glow Dental, Dr. Park uses emergency dentistry to treat various oral health problems, including:

  • Chipped and cracked teeth
  • Damaged dental restorations
  • Knocked-out permanent teeth
  • Broken orthodontic appliances
  • Oral abscesses
  • Cuts and lacerations that won’t stop bleeding
  • Severe toothaches

You might also benefit from emergency dentistry if you get something lodged between your teeth, such as a toothpick or a piece of food.

If I need emergency dentistry, what steps should I take?

Every dental emergency is different, but Dr. Park recommends taking specific steps in the following situations:

Knocked out permanent tooth

If you get hit in the mouth and lose a tooth, pick it up by the crown and rinse it off in tap water. Try putting your tooth back in its socket, but if it moves around, place it inside a glass of milk. Call Dr. Park after you’ve secured the tooth. She can get you in for a same-day visit and make recommendations to relieve pain and swelling in the meantime.

Damaged dental restoration

If you bite down on something hard and crack a dental crown or bridge, collect all of the pieces and wrap them in a piece of foil. Then, walk into Glow Dental or give Dr. Park a call. She can make same-day repairs and prevent additional damage.

Severe toothache

If you develop a toothache and it doesn’t improve with anti-inflammatory medication or rinsing your mouth out with warm salt water, contact Dr. Park and the staff at Glow Dental. After an oral exam and series of X-rays, Dr. Park can make custom treatment recommendations.

Can I reduce my risk of dental emergencies?

You can significantly reduce your risk of dental emergencies by practicing good oral hygiene. Dr. Park recommends brushing your teeth twice daily, flossing regularly, and visiting Glow Dental every six months for preventive teeth cleaning and an oral exam.
